Aisle Say: Modern Family

With a relationship that doesn’t fit the traditional paradigm, it’s hard to find the right song with the right message.

20 GrandfatherWith my impending nuptials on my mind — and rain pelting my window — I decided it was time to pursue a new project. I turned on some music to liven up the mood, and that’s when I had a light bulb moment: Why not start working on my wedding’s rhythmic journey? Liam and I already have a song, but there’s another special man I’ll be dancing with that evening. With my children down for a nap, I started searching the Internet to find my perfect “grandfather-granddaughter” song.

Sitting at my desk, I carefully listened to the many possibilities that wedding websites suggested as options for my papa promenade. Skimming the pages of the Knot’s top thirty father daughter songs and Offbeat Bride’s unique selection of dazzling daddy waltzes, I found myself in tears.

I sat there wistfully listening to the instrumental poems and picturing how each might work for this memorable moment. As the music filled my ears, pieces of each song spoke to my heart, but sadly none gave me the feeling of being the right one.

Since my modern family doesn’t fit the exact father-daughter mold, most of the songs were immediately out of the running. With lyrics like “daddy’s little girl” and “dad, take my hand,” they spoke of a life that wasn’t exactly mine. Wiping away tears, I decided that none of these songs fit my criteria and I think I’ll leave this one up to him. I hope he has better luck finding a song to represent our special bond.
