RI-based Loren Hope launches a new line of wedding jewelry.

By Kaitlyn Murray

Once upon a time (around the early twentieth century to be precise) our small but great capital city of Providence was hailed as the jewelry capital of the world. But, as time would have it, the once thriving industry fell victim to the country’s deteriorating economy. What was not lost over the years, however, was the state’s intimate knowledge of metalworking and precious stones. This familiarity was especially not lost on Loren Barham, the creator of Loren Hope Designs, an immensely successful jewelry design business whose works are featured in boutiques and specialty shops worldwide. In 2013, after experiencing the region’s passion for jewelry making first-hand, the North Carolina-native relocated her studio to Rhode Island. Barham’s unique designs are beautifully crafted and reflect a charming vintage air that was once so ubiquitous to the Rhode Island jewelry industry. Since moving to RI, the Loren Hope brand has continued to grow. Just this year, Barham launched the brand’s latest line: wedding jewelry. Engaged caught up with Barham to get the scoop.

What made you decide to launch a bridal line?

We had a good amount of brides choosing to wear Loren Hope on their wedding day or choosing to give it to their bridesmaids as gifts. I felt it was only a natural fit to come out with some pieces that were designed specifically for brides.

How does your approach differ while designing jewelry for your wedding line as opposed to designing everyday jewelry?

My pieces tend to be larger scale and packed with lots of color. My bridal pieces are much more delicate and are offered in classic crystal.

LH Effie NlDo you have a favorite piece or design from the wedding line?

I love the Effie tassel earrings. I love tassels and they are truly versatile. After you wear them on your big day, you can easily wear them day or night with your regular wardrobe.

Will the inventory change with the season?

Our bridal pieces will all be made in limited runs to keep the collection special and unique. I will be releasing new designs through out the year, mostly around vintage inspired jewelry designs.

Do you take requests from brides-to-be if they are looking for something specific?

Absolutely! It’s all about feeling special on your wedding day, and we are more than happy to accommodate special requests. I have taken on bespoke projects for clients as well as customized colors or added embellishments to existing designs.

Your spring/summer 2015 line was inspired by mermaids. Did any outside influences inspire your bridal collection?

The bridal pieces are classic pieces that are timeless. They are simplistic, pretty silhouettes that are all inspired by vintage rhinestone jewelry.

Do you have any advice for brides-to-be when it comes to picking out jewelry for their big day?

Jewelry is such a personal thing. I tend to advise using jewelry as a way to dress up a simple wedding dress, but don’t go overboard. The bride’s face should always be the focus…and the jewelry should accentuate that. Since there is usually a veil for the ceremony, I tend to advise doing something dainty for the ceremony, and then changing into something more festive for the reception like fun statement earrings or a big statement cuff.

What jewelry did you wear on your wedding day?

I wore an antique ring from my mother in-law, and a pair of vintage crystal and pearl Monet earrings (likely made in RI!).
